Aged and hardened base gaskets, improper bolt torque, or corrosion and warping of the mounting surface can cause external leaks from the housing base. Symptoms include oil seepage at the housing-engine block junction, and gradual oil level drops. To resolve, remove the housing, clean both mating surfaces, install a new base gasket, and tighten bolts in a crisscross pattern to specified torque.
Worn or damaged O-rings, over-tightening causing O-ring distortion, or under-tightening with insufficient sealing pressure can cause leaks around the filter cap. To resolve, drain oil from the housing, remove the cap, replace the old O-ring, lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil, and tighten the cap to factory torque specification.
A bypass valve stuck open will reduce idle oil pressure and allow unfiltered oil to circulate, accelerating engine wear. A valve stuck closed will cause excessive oil pressure, which can damage filter seals and engine bearings. The bypass valve is an integral component and cannot be replaced separately; full assembly replacement is required if valve failure is confirmed.
Cracks in the aluminum housing can result from thermal stress, over-tightening, or impact damage. Cracked housings cannot be repaired reliably and may fail completely under engine operating pressure. Immediate replacement of the full assembly is recommended if cracks are detected.
